YEAR ONE is a Judd Apatow / Harold Ramis comedy starring Jack Black and Michael Sera as two ill-fated hunter gatherers who flee their village, then in pursuit of friends sold into slavery, voyage through the Biblical ancient world meeting Cain and sundry others. This extended version of the film was classified '15' for two uses of strong language, with a partially heard third use; and moderate sex references.

Additional sex references in this version include a High Priest - asked to predict the future by looking at a cluster of bloody entrails - saying, "His poor rectum is absolutely pulverised. Which is not unusual for a sheep in this region." The graphic description clearly implies bestiality in crude terms which exceeds the allowance under '12' Guidelines, which state, "sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers".

Guidelines at '12' do allow for the infrequent use of strong language, but in this case the presence of two clear uses plus a partially heard third use strains the parameters of what is permitted at '12'.

There are additional moderate sex references, including several references to Sodom and Gomorrah, sodomy, depravity, 'whores' and similar. In one scene at a party a character is required to give an oil rub to a High Priest which entails verbal references to 'nut sacks', and also there are mentions of sexually transmitted infections. Abraham appears as a character who plans to circumcise the males in his tribe; circumcision is described in moderate detail and recurs as a running joke. 'Caveman' sexual etiquette is also lampooned with several references to hitting women over the head as part of seduction. These references would have been allowed under '12A/12' Guidelines, as they were in the theatrical version of the feature.

Additionally, fight scenes involve a head butt, several clear punches to the head, masked beheading and some blood free sword slashes. YEAR ONE also contains moderate language, including 'bitch' and euphemisms for male genitalia ('dick' and 'boner').

Precuts information

During post-production, the distributor sought and was given advice on how to secure the desired classification. Following this advice, certain changes were made prior to submission

This film was originally shown to the BBFC in an unfinished version. The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive a '15' classification but that the requested '12A' certificate could be achieved by making changes to dialogue. In particular the BBFC suggested that the company remove the line, "my thingy smells like lamb chops" when a character talks about 'multiplying with sheep'; that they remove the line, "did you know he can put his penis in his mouth, the whole thing"; and the line "his poor rectum is absolutely pulverised, which is not usual for a sheep in this region". When the finished version of the film was submitted these changes had been made and the film was classified '12A'.
