RED TAILS is a drama about a US air squadron in Italy during the second world war, made up entirely of black American pilots and ground crew. The film was classified '12' for moderate war violence.

The film features several aerial combat sequences during which aircraft are seen on fire and crashing to the ground. There is occasional sight of bomber crews being thrown about inside their aircraft, with some blood smears seen on clothes and faces. In one sequence, we see bullet impacts on a pilot's chest, after which he coughs up some dark blood. In other sequences we see ground crews being thrown by explosions during attacks on an airfield and some sight of dead bodies in a wide view of the airfield. The level of blood shown in these sequences exceeds the terms of the BBFC's Guidelines at 'PG' but is permissible at '12' where the Guidelines state 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood'.

The film also deals with the issue of racial discrimination. Senior officers from the squadron experience prejudice during meetings at the Pentagon and squadron members in Italy are told they are not welcome at a 'white' Officers' Club, which results in a brief brawl. During this scene, one of the white officers shouts 'nigger' at his black colleague. The use of discriminatory language is not endorsed or condoned and reflects the period in which the film is set. RED TAILS goes on to show how the squadron members win acceptance through their bravery and skill in the air. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be endorsed by the work as a whole'.

The film also contains some mild bad language, including uses of 'shit', 'bullshit', 'sons of bitches', 'bastard' and 'crap'.
