RED LIGHTS is a US psychological horror thriller. It follows two sceptics and researchers who are determined to prove that a famous TV psychic is a fraud. The film was classified '15' for strong violence and language and sustained threat.

There is a sense of threat throughout the film. There are a number of 'jump' moments and creepy unexplained occurrences as the researchers are forced to question whether some paranormal events may be real, causing them to feel personally threatened. The BBFC's Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'. The level of threat in RED LIGHTS exceeds this test and is more appropriately classified at '15' where the Guidelines state 'Strong threat and menace are permitted'. There are also some quite intense sequences, including a seance at the start of the film.

There is a prolonged fight sequence in which a character is unexpectedly attacked in a bathroom. The fight includes heavy blows and sight of heads being bashed hard against sinks and toilet bowls. One character is almost drowned in the toilet bowl, with some focus on his face as he struggles underwater. His face also becomes very bloody after he receives a series of heavy punches. The detail of the violence and the emphasis on blood exceeds the terms of the Guidelines at '12A'/'12' but is permissible at '15' where the Guidelines state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury'.

The film also includes a number of clear uses of strong language. The Guidelines at '15' state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, 'fuck')'.
