RANGO is an animated feature about a pet Chameleon who is lost by his owners in the Mojave Desert. He then talks his way into becoming the Sheriff of a small Wild West town, inhabited by other animals. It was classified 'PG' for mild threat and scary scenes.

The BBFC's Guidelines at 'U' state there may be 'Occasional mild threat or menace only'. In RANGO there is a scene in which a thuggish rodent holds a knife to a small bird's throat. Whilst clearly unrealistic, the threat is reasonably sustained and therefore more appropriately placed at 'PG' where the Guidelines state 'Moderate violence, without detail, may be allowed, if justified by its context (for example, history, comedy or fantasy)'. The Guidelines at 'U' also state 'Scary sequences should be mild, brief and unlikely to cause undue anxiety to young children. The outcome should be reassuring'. Although the outcome of RANGO is ultimately reassuring, there are sequences that may frighten very young children. For example, in one scene the heroine is caught by a giant snake with nasty glinting yellow eyes that hisses menacingly in her face. This is also more appropriately classified at 'PG' where the Guidelines state 'Frightening sequences should not be prolonged or intense. Fantasy settings may be a mitigating factor'.

RANGO also contains sequences of mild action violence, a couple of moments of very mild innuendo, and scenes that show some animals smoking, although these neither glamorise nor promote tobacco products.
