NINE is a musical set in Italy in the 1960s about a film director struggling to come up with a script for his latest picture. It has been classified '12' for moderate sex references and language.

The sex references include several song and dance sequences that use burlesque imagery including a strip tease routine. The dancing is sexually provocative and this is occasionally backed up with dialogue references, the strongest of which is used by a female character who tells her lover "I'll be here waiting, with my legs open". At '12' BBFC Guidelines state that 'Nudity is allowed but must be brief and discreet'. It also states that 'Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers'.

The film contains infrequent moderate language, including one use of 'whore', spoken in a misogynistic fashion by a male character. At '12' BBFC Guidelines allow for unlimited uses of moderate language.

The film also contains frequent smoking. It is set in the mid 1960s and several of the characters smoke more or less throughout the film. The smoking adds to the visual texture of the film, and in some sense it could be said to look appealing. The film may have appeal to younger teenage viewers, but the characters are all older with further distancing provided by the period setting.

Finally, the film contains an implied suicide attempt. A female character is seen being attended to by a doctor, who explains that she took '...five or six pills'. We do not see what the pills were and the doctor goes on to say that it was only enough to make her very sick.
