LUCY is a science fiction action thriller, in which a young woman who has been coerced into being a drugs mule develops superhuman powers when a package containing an experimental drug breaks open inside her.

There is strong violence throughout, mostly during the course of gun battles. There are blood spurts, blood splashes and bloody bullet impacts as people are shot, but little is seen in terms of injury detail. In one scene a man is pinned to the chair in which he is sitting, with a pair of knives that are driven through the backs of his hands and into the arms of the chair.

The film includes a montage of clips of animals mating and giving birth; the sequence includes brief sight of a woman straddling and riding a mostly unseen man in the back seat of a car. There is also some mild bad language, including uses of 'ass', 'asshole', 'damn', 'God', 'hell' and 'shit'.
