LA PEAU DOUCE - SILKEN SKIN is a subtitled French black and white drama about the consequences of an adulterous affair between a middle-aged professor and a young air stewardess. It was previously classified 'X' on film in 1964 and 'PG' on video in 1994 and 2002. Under current BBFC classification Guidelines the film was classified 'PG' for references to a sexual experience.

At 'PG', the BBFC's Guidelines on sex state that 'sexual activity may be implied, but should be discreet and infrequent. Mild sex references and innuendo only' is allowed. The film contains infrequent implied sexual activity when male and female characters embrace and kiss, but the scenes cut away before any sexual activity is shown. There is also a scene where a man slowly unhooks a woman's stocking and removes it whilst she sleeps and dialogue references to 'making love' that are allowable at 'PG'. More significantly, there is also a scene where the young woman describes a previous sexual experience to an older lover. She explains how she finally agreed to make love to an ardent boyfriend who treated her in a rough manner that she initially enjoyed but subsequently regretted. The scene is not intended to arouse and the sex references are matter of fact. They are neither vivid, descriptive nor detailed, and there is no accompanying sexual activity. So in the context of a sensitive and restrained film about adult relationships, the scene can be contained at the 'PG' classification.

LA PEAU DOUCE - SILKEN SKIN also contains an off-screen shooting when a woman shoots a man with a shotgun and we subsequently see him fall dead, but there is no sight of any injury or blood. There is also occasional lifestyle smoking by several characters. But there is no emphasis placed on the activity, no brand promotion, and no sense of glamorisation or promotion as the characters are older adults in a period film with little appeal to children and where the smoking reflects the time the film was made. There is also infrequent very mild language (for example, 'goddamn') which is containable at 'PG'.
