THE GREAT GATSBY is the latest adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, which tells the story of a man's obsessive quest to reignite a romance with a woman from his past. It is rated 12 for moderate sex, violence and bloody images.

In one scene, the narrator of the story has to sit and listen while his friend has noisy sex with his mistress in an adjoining room. No sex is shown. Later in the film, the two central characters are seen having sex, although there is no nudity, nor any obvious sexual movement.

There is a shooting in which a small trickle of blood is seen seeping from an exit wound under the victim's shirt. He then falls into a swimming pool where the water becomes clouded by blood. The man's killer is then seen placing a gun into his own mouth but the suicide is not shown; only the sound of the shot is heard.

There is some sight of deep lacerations and abrasions on the body of a woman who has been knocked down by a car. The accident is shown twice, the second time in slow motion, as the woman strikes the car windscreen and is sent flying through the air before landing heavily in the road.

There is one use of racist language when a Jewish mobster is referred to "a little kike".

The film also contains some implied drug use as a woman attempts to persuade the narrator to partake of what she describes as "nerve pills".

There is frequent smoking throughout the film, both of cigarettes and cigars.

No-one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD.
