GEARS OF WAR 2 is a ‘third person shooter’ for the Xbox 360 console. Set some time in the future, the player assumes the role of Sergeant Marcus Fenix, a hardbitten, elite soldier. Fenix and his colleagues from the COG (Coalition of Ordered Governments) Delta Squad battle their way through several levels / missions in order to save humanity from the Locust Horde. Fenix’s opponents comprise reptilian soldiers and a variety of ‘boss monsters’. GEARS OF WAR 2 was passed ‘18’ for strong bloody violence.

The BBFC Guidelines at ‘15’ state that violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The violence and associated gore in this game is too strong for ‘15’ and can only be contained at the adult classification category. Moreover, throughout the game there is a clear dwelling on the infliction of bloody injury. Shooting adversaries often produces large blood spurts and heads can be blown off. The player also has the option of cutting opponents in half or impaling them on the blade of the chain-saw attachment of the standard issue assault rifle. In such cases blood appears to splatter onto the television screen. The player is also able to punch fallen enemy soldiers, stomp on their heads or smash their heads with a long-barrelled weapon. In what is probably the bloodiest sequence in the game, Fenix and his colleagues escape from the stomach of a giant monster by cutting through its stomach wall with their chain-saws. They emerge, literally, into a sea of blood.

GEARS OF WAR 2 also contains strong language.
