THE DUCHESS is a period drama about Georgiana Cavendish, the 18th Century Duchess of Devonshire, who was in love with Charles Grey, the eventual leader of the Whig party, whilst trapped in a loveless marriage to the Duke of Devonshire.

Violence

There is a scene of sexual violence when the Duke forces himself on his wife in order to try to produce a male heir. The rape is mainly implied, with screams of protest heard from outside the bedroom door, but there is sight of Georgina protesting against her husband as he begins to lift up her skirt.

Sex

There are scenes of moderate sex, which include sight of a woman straddling a man before he begins to thrust into her, as well as a scene in which a man exposes a woman's breasts before getting on top of her, with some thrusting detail.
