DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is a supernatural horror film about a young girl who moves into an old house with her father and his girlfriend. The young girl is subsequently threatened by creatures who inhabit the building. It was classified '15' for strong horror and sustained threat.

There are a few scenes featuring both strong horror and sustained threat. In one scene, a man lures a woman into a cellar before attacking her. He places a chisel against her teeth and uses a hammer to apparently smash her teeth out, although this is not shown. The man then offers the teeth to some unseen creatures, who drag the man away. Another scene features an elderly male gardener who is attacked by creatures. They impale him with his tools, slash his hand with a pair of scissors, and then continue to attack him, leaving him heavily bloodied. There is a further scene in which a woman is flung against a wall by the creatures, resulting in her legs snapping, as well as a scene showing a creature being briefly squashed, resulting in a spurt of blood. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable'. The strong violence does not dwell on detail, as most of the injuries occur offscreen.

Most of the other scenes of threat and menace focus on the terrorisation of a young girl who is the focus of the creatures' intentions. There are some lengthy scenes showing her being stalked, threatened, and attacked. Many of these scenes are strong and sustained, although they predominantly occur in darkened surroundings. These scenes exceed the terms of the Guidelines at '12A'/'12' which state 'Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained'. However, they are permissible at '15' where 'Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised'.
