DARKSIDERS is a fantasy action adventure game played form the third-person perspective. The player assumes the role of WAR, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The game was classified '15' for containing strong bloody violence.

There is frequent sight of spurting blood as the fantastical enemies are killed, and during a level the player can kill humans either with sword attacks or by throwing cars at them. However unlike the creature enemies, there's no apparent ability to dismember bodies and the corpses can't be harmed once they fall to the ground. Furthermore, the bodies disappear mere seconds after falling. The player can deliver punishing final blows which are portrayed with a mini-animated sequence as War runs a creature through gorily with his sword, rips its wings off with a spurt of blood and so on. The player can also double tap the attack button to smash enemies into the floor, resulting in another cloud of blood. Throughout the game there is fleeting sight of arcs of blood, and flying heads or limbs but bodies vanish rapidly.

The 'cut scenes' in the game also contain some gory images - at the end of one level we see War jump onto a huge boss and ram his sword into its eye, creating gouts of blood. The creature roars in pain and soon dies, blood streaming from the wound.

At '15', the BBFC's Guidelines state that 'violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable.' As stated, the violence and gore in DARKSIDERS is frequent but only seen fleetingly and always placed within a wholly fantastical scenario. There is not time to dwell on the infliction of pain and injury due to the fast pace of the game. This led to the 15 certificate decision.

There is also moderate language in the game which includes uses of "bastards", "whore" and "bitch".
