THE BUTLER is a film, inspired by real events, about the son of a black sharecropper who escapes from slavery and becomes a butler at the White House, working for seven American Presidents.

In one scene, a bus carrying Civil Rights activists is attacked by the Klu Klux Klan. The windows of the bus are smashed and petrol bombs are thrown inside, sending the victims fleeing in terror. In other scenes, activists are shown being abused and attacked by racists during non violent protests. There is also some footage showing real riots from the 1960s. In two other scenes there is sight of black men who have been lynched and hanged.

There is use of infrequent strong language ('f**k'), an implied use of 'motherf**ker', and one use of 'bitch'. There is also some milder bad language. There are a number of uses of the racist term 'nigger', although these occur in a historical context and the film clearly condemns racist language and attitudes.

THE BUTLER contains a discreetly implied rape scene. There is also sight of smoking, but it is neither glamorised nor promoted.
