THE BROTHERS BLOOM is a comedy drama about a pair of confidence tricksters who plan a final con to deceive an eccentric heiress. It was passed '12' for strong language, moderate violence, gore and sex references .

At '12A/12', the BBFC Guidelines state that 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'. There are two uses of strong language in this film. The first comes as a female character describes one of the con men's personality traits. It is used descriptively and is neither aggressive nor directed. The second comes when a female character accidentally causes a huge explosion. This use is neither aggressive nor directed and is instead a comic exclamation of surprise.

As for violence, BBFC '12A/12' Guidelines state 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context'. This film contains some scenes featuring moderate violence and gore. There is a scene showing a man being repeatedly shot with impact wounds and small blood spurts visible; a scene where two men fight and punch each other in the face and back before one is apparently shot, with blood seen on his shirt; a scene showing a man with a cut and bloodied face apparently being shot and killed before returning to life; and sight of a cut and bloodstained man dying and blood briefly dripping from his arm. Some of these scenes are subsequently shown to have been faked as part of a confidence trick, so their impact is diminished by the context. There is also a scene where a man is slashed across the back of the hand with a broken bottle, with sight of blood briefly shown, but the cutting is impressionistically filmed and the scene is rapidly edited. All of these scenes contain more injury detail than is allowable at 'PG'. However, they are filmed in restrained fashion which establishes what has happened without dwelling on detail or emphasising injuries or blood. They are also occasional rather than frequent, so they are permissible at '12'.

At '12A/12', 'Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable'. This film contains a scene where a woman writhes on a bed during a thunderstorm and apparently becomes sexually aroused and a scene where a man speculates that a woman feels 'horny'. These sex references are infrequent, oblique and none of them are unduly crude, graphic or unsuitable for young teenagers. Although they exceed the type of 'Mild sex references and innuendo only' that are allowable at 'PG', they are permissible at '12'.

THE BROTHERS BLOOM also contains some smoking when characters smoke cigarettes or a pipe. However, the smokers are incidental characters and there is little focus on the activity, which is neither glamorised nor promoted. There is also some moderate and mild language ('bitch', 'son of a bitch', 'shit', 'Jesus', 'God', 'damn', 'bastard', 'goddamn').
