THE BEAVER is a drama about a man suffering from depression who attempts to rebuild his life by communicating with the world through a glove puppet. The film was classified '12' for one use of strong language and mental illness theme.

The single use of strong language is neither aggressive nor directed and meets with the requirements of the BBFC’s Guidelines at '12A'/'12' which state 'The use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'.

The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' also state 'Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers'. The film's engagement with mental illness is dominated by the lead character's condition and his attempts to reconnect with the world, but is also played out in the psychological problems of other characters. However, the treatment of mental illness is both sensitive and responsible. The film does enter some bleak areas of psychological conditions, such as a suicide attempt and self-harming, but does so with discretion and with a lack of sensational or gratuitous detail. Although the film deals with serious issues, it ultimately offers an uplifting portrayal of characters who acquire the courage to face and overcome their problems.

The film also contains some milder language, including uses of 'shit', 'sod', 'bloody', 'hell', 'ass', 'crap', 'goddamn', 'bollocks', 'balls', 'damn', 'Christ', 'bitch', 'bleeding' and 'wanker', a scene of moderate violence, and a moderate sex scene.
