ALICE WALKER - BEAUTY IN TRUTH is a documentary about the life and career of the American poet, feminist, activist and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Walker.

Sex

There are a number of mild verbal sex references. These include a passing mention of Walker's choice of a particular lover, a reference to the fact she had an abortion at the age of eighteen or nineteen, mention of same sex relationships, undetailed references to female genital mutilation.

Violence

The documentary also contains black and white archive footage showing protest violence relating to the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. This includes sight of African Americans being manhandled and assaulted by baton-wielding policemen and their dogs. In one clip a man with blood on his face is shown being dragged away by police officers. Otherwise, there is no sight of blood or injury detail.

A female African American commentator says "No tree ever called me a n*gger." The use of racist language is being criticised and is permissible at PG in this educational and historical context.
