violence
Strong battle violence includes stabbings and slashings with bladed weapons, throat-cuttings, gunfire and crunchy blows, resulting in bloody detail. A man’s head is twisted until his neck breaks, and another man’s ear is cut off during battle, with aftermath sight of the severed ear in another person’s hand.
discrimination
There are scenes of historical racism, including ones in which African people are held captive and subjected to dehumanising treatment by white slavers. A white European refers to African people as 'savages'.
sexual violence and sexual threat
Brief flashbacks show a man lying on top of a bound woman during an otherwise off-screen series of rapes. A white man is shown groping a captive African woman’s clothed breasts while inspecting her for sale. There are also moderate verbal references to sexual violence.
injury detail
We see bone shifting under a woman’s skin as her broken arm is realigned. There are images of blood and wounds on dead and injured people, in addition to brief sight of severed heads.
additional issues
Bad language includes ‘bitch’, ‘bastard’ and ‘hell’. There are scenes of moderate threat and emotional upset, and infrequent mild sex references. A woman is shown making a small cut on a newborn baby’s arm in order to create an identifying mark.
