RSC THE WINTER’S TALE is a recording of a live performance of Shakespeare’s play in which a jealous king exiles his newborn daughter.

RSC THE WINTER’S TALE is a recording of a live performance of Shakespeare’s play in which a jealous king exiles his newborn daughter.

threat and horror
A king shouts aggressively at his pregnant wife and grabs her roughly while accusing her of infidelity. He later threatens to ‘dash out’ their baby’s brains and commands that the woman and child be thrown into a fire, although he subsequently commutes the sentence. Another man says that if he learned that his daughters were not his biological offspring he would ‘geld’ them so that they couldn’t bear children. Another scene implies that a man is being fatally attacked by a wild animal; we see him yelling and flailing and hear the creature growling, but the attack is stylised and devoid of bloodshed.
sex
A man becomes obsessed by the false belief that his wife has been unfaithful and that their child is not his. There are mild references to adultery, ‘getting wenches with child’, and 'tumbling in the hay', in addition to uses of the terms ‘bastard’, 'cuckold', 'harlot', ‘bawd’, 'bed-swerver', 'strumpet' and 'doxy'.
additional issues
There are mild scenes of emotional upset. Other issues include brief and infrequent references to suicide.
