National Theatre Live: Othello

moderate bad language, bloody images, domestic abuse, racism, suicide

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: OTHELLO is a filmed performance of William Shakespeare's play in which a man is led to believe his wife is having an affair.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: OTHELLO is a filmed performance of William Shakespeare's play in which a man is led to believe his wife is having an affair.

violence
A man pulls his wife's hair before forcing a kiss on her, another man grabs his wife by the throat and, in a later scene, the same man strangles his wife. A woman has a cut and bruised face, and there are also brief verbal references to domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is not condoned by the work as a whole. There are also brief stabbings and fight scenes; however, these scenes are darkly lit and impact detail is also masked.
language
There is moderate bad language ('whore'), as well as milder terms (for example, 'harlot', 'Christ', 'God', 'damn').
discrimination
There is discrimination and racism in scenes in which people refer to Othello in derogatory fashion (for example, "Filthy black Moor", "Sooty ram"). However, discrimination and racism are not condoned by the work as a whole.
injury detail
There is brief sight of a man's heavily bloodstained face. In another scene, a man briefly cuts his own hand accompanied by brief wound detail and blood on his hand. There is also brief sight of blood in the aftermath of violence.
suicide and self-harm
A man takes his own life in a scene in which he stabs himself; however, there is limited detail. There are also brief verbal suicide references.
flashing/flickering lights
This work contains flashing images which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
additional issues
There are also mld verbal sex references, including innuendo.
