As part of the intended home media package of Adrian Lyne’s LOLITA, two additional/extended scenes were submitted for classification: LOLITA - THE COMIC BOOK and LOLITA - THE LAKE POINT COTTAGES. The two scenes depict extended sexual encounters between an adult character and the eponymous Lolita, who is reported to be around 14 years old within the narrative. Both scenes of sexual violence contain material that was not present in the classified feature, including insert shots of nudity (although these may have been achieved using a body double rather than the actor, who was herself under the age of 18 at the time of filming). In isolation, these sequences do not have the wider narrative context of the feature itself. In making a decision as to whether a video work is suitable for classification, the BBFC applies the criteria set out in its Classification Guidelines. These Guidelines are the result of a regular public consultation process and reflect the balance of media effects research, the requirements of UK law and the attitudes of people in the UK. The Guidelines set out clearly the BBFC's serious concerns about the portrayal of sexual violence. The BBFC are also obliged under the Video Recordings Act 1984 (VRA) to have special regard to the likelihood of any harm that may be caused to the viewer or, through their behaviour, to society. This risk of harm includes encouraging an interest in underage sex. The BBFC has taken the decision that these sequences, especially in isolation, have the potential to encourage an interest in underage sexual activity and present a harm risk. Both submissions are therefore unsuitable for classification.
Passed '18' for destructive sexual relationship, sexual situations, and one scene of violence.
