We are told that in the 1960s the Indonesian government instituted a ‘cleansing programme’ under which people were prevented from learning or speaking Mandarin, and ethnic Chinese were forced to change their names to Indonesian names. The film ends on a reassuring note, however, and carries a positive message promoting tolerance and inclusivity.
