violence
There are a scenes showing the aftermath of battle, including sight of dead or dying soldiers and injured men in makeshift hospitals. At one point a soldier's leg is amputated and the soldier is heard screaming in agony. The main character becomes a refugee, and is threatened by advancing armies. In a post-war scene a northern soldier is shot dead after entering a southern house.
discrimination
The film presents an uncritical portrayal of slavery, and employs outdated stereotypes in its depiction of Black characters. The racist term 'darkies' also features.
additional issues
The film implies that a woman stops having sex with her husband. One scene sees a man take his wife to bed, in what could be interpreted as a scene of sexual violence, although the reading is ambiguous. There is also use of very mild bad language ('damn').
