FAMILY DINNER is an Austrian psychological horror thriller in which a teenager visits her nutritionist aunt in the hope of losing weight but soon discovers a dark side to her family.

FAMILY DINNER is an Austrian psychological horror thriller in which a teenager visits her nutritionist aunt in the hope of losing weight but soon discovers a dark side to her family.

violence
There are scenes of stabbing. A person is shown frantically screaming and flailing after being set on fire, although there is no clear injury detail. There are also scenes of domestic abuse, including ones in which a woman encourages her teenage niece to starve herself and later denies her food when she asks to quit the ‘diet’. A teenage boy is subjected to isolating and controlling behaviour by his mother, whom he fears means to do him physical harm. In one scene she slaps him, bloodying his lip on her ring. It is also implied that he is being physically abused off screen by his stepfather, resulting in a black eye.
threat and horror
There is a pervasive ominous tone and occasional scenes of strong horror and threat, including ones involving cannibalism.
language
There is infrequent use of very strong language ('c**t') and more frequent use of strong language ('f**k'). Milder terms include 'bitch', 'arsehole', 'bastard', 'bullshit' and 'shit', in addition to use of the middle finger gesture.
sex
A teenager accidentally witnesses her aunt and uncle having sex and briefly lingers to watch them, unseen by the couple. The scene features vigorous riding detail and partial breast nudity.
injury detail
There are brief gory images of a dismembered human corpse. A scene of animal butchery features close-up images of bloody organs.
theme
There are references to negative body image and scenes of disordered eating throughout the film, as an overweight teenage girl - having sought her nutritionist aunt’s help in losing weight - is subjected to a dangerous starvation regime. However, the aunt’s practices are revealed to be part of a sinister ritual rather than a genuine attempt to induce weight-loss. There are also scenes of weight-based discrimination, when the girl’s teenage cousin makes cruel comments about her appearance.
additional issues
A man corners a teenage girl and invades her personal space in a sexually threatening manner, forcing her to physically defend herself with a knife; however, the incident is brief and is subsequently revealed to be a dream sequence. We see a wounded and distressed rabbit during a hunting scene, but there is no evidence of unsimulated animal cruelty.
