violence
Distressing depictions of massacres include a sequence in which a soldier beheads female captives in gory fashion, and another soldier yanks a baby from its mother’s arms and dashes the infant against a wall, creating a spurt of blood. Other victims are shot or set on fire. Scenes of bloody war violence include stabbings, gunfire and throat-cutting. Other scenes show police officers brutally beating civilians. There is also a short scene in which a woman verbally abuses a child in her care while painfully tugging the girl’s ear.
threat and horror
Scenes of intense threat and emotional distress include upsetting portrayals of massacres, as well as a disturbing montage sequence in which frightened men are rounded up at gunpoint, physically restrained and forced to undergo surgical procedures - without strong visual detail - as part of a compulsory sterilisation programme.
language
Bad language includes ‘bloody’, ‘shit’, ‘God', 'hell' and 'damn’.
discrimination
Scenes of discriminatory behaviour include one in which a white man makes derogatory comments about the physical appearance of Indian women. Male politicians dismissively refer to the female prime minister using sexist terms such as ‘dumb little girl’.
injury detail
There is occasional bloody detail in the context of violence, as well as brief black-and-white still images of the real Indira Gandhi’s dead body at her funeral.
flashing/flickering lights
This work contains flashing images which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
