A CAT IN THE BRAIN is a 1990 Italian horror thriller in which a film director is tortured by his dark fantasies. The BBFC is obliged under the Video Recordings Act 1984 (VRA) to have special regard to the likelihood of any harm that may be caused to the viewer or, through their behaviour, to society, by exposure to certain content. In 1999, A CAT IN THE BRAIN was submitted to the BBFC on home video. The BBFC decided that the film presented a potential harm risk, owing to its sustained depiction of violence. Many of these scenes depicted violence towards women, and in some cases suggested the victims were enjoying the violence being inflicted upon them. The extent of these sequences was such that cuts were not viable. The distributor was informed that A CAT IN THE BRAIN was unsuitable for classification.
