The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation and the UK's authority on age ratings for films and digital content. Our mission is to empower audiences, especially parents, to make informed decisions about what their families watch. We are at the forefront of regulatory policy, advocating for the protection of children in an evolving digital landscape.

We are seeking an experienced Director of Communications and Public Affairs to lead our advocacy, external relations, and policy development, including our research and education functions. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the BBFC’s future and ensuring our regulatory framework aligns with industry standards, government policies, and public expectations.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), you will drive the strategic direction of our communications, public affairs, and policy initiatives. You will act as a key spokesperson for the BBFC, engage with stakeholders across government, industry, and public sectors, and contribute to shaping the future of film and digital content regulation in the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and public affairs strategy in alignment with the BBFC’s vision and values. Work closely with the CEO, ELT, and the Board to influence policy and contribute to strategic decision-making.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, digital platforms, and broadcasters. Act as a public advocate for the BBFC, providing expert commentary on policy issues.

  • Policy Development, Research & Strategy: Lead the creation of forward-thinking public policy strategies, research and ensuring compliance with UK legislation and advising on emerging regulatory trends.

  • Public Affairs, Advocacy & Education: Represent the BBFC at local, national, and international levels, driving advocacy efforts that support child protection and media literacy.

  • Leadership & Team Management: Manage teams, overseeing budgets and ensuring delivery of high-quality policy recommendations and advocacy campaigns.

Requirements:

  • A strategic thinker with extensive experience in public policy, communications, or public affairs, ideally within the media, entertainment, or regulatory sectors.

  • Demonstrable leadership skills with the ability to inspire and manage high-performing teams.

  • Proven track record of engaging with government officials, industry bodies, and regulators.

  • In-depth knowledge of UK media regulation and child protection policies.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with experience presenting complex policy issues to diverse audiences, including the media.

  • Strong commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, both within the team and in wider organisational impact.

Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in public policy or public affairs at a senior level, with a proven understanding of the UK legislative landscape.
