The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is thrilled to announce the return of its flagship Create The Card Competition for the upcoming release of DC Studios’ Superman, flying back into cinemas on 11 July, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The exciting art contest offers young artists a super opportunity to design the official BBFC Black Card for the film. The winning entry will be displayed before every UK cinema screening of Superman.

To mark the launch of this year’s competition, David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) have encouraged 12-16 year olds to apply, giving them a “chance to unleash [their] artistic powers, celebrate what Superman means to [them] — and be part of cinema history”.

The competition encourages creativity while educating entrants about film classification and the importance of age ratings in protecting audiences. It also promotes critical thinking in young people about the content they consume, helping them to make informed viewing choices.

The lucky winner, who will be revealed in July, will receive a framed copy of their winning Black Card and an invite to an exclusive Superman screening.

President of the British Board of Film Classification, Natasha Kaplinsky OBE, said: “As Superman flies back onto the big screen, the BBFC’s Create The Card competition returns to celebrate young imaginations in heroic style. This year, we’ve joined forces with Warner Bros. Pictures to mark Superman’s cinematic comeback—and we’re calling on young artists to channel their superpowers into designing the iconic BBFC Black Card for the film.

“Create The Card is a unique opportunity for young film fans to unleash their creativity and leave their superheroic legacy on cinematic history. The winning design will be screened in cinemas across the country when the film is released this summer.

“Given the outstanding talent we’ve seen in previous competitions, we’re confident this year’s entries will soar to new heights. The BBFC is proud to inspire the next generation to explore the magic and influence of film—and the vital role age ratings play in shaping their viewing experiences.”

Alex Lewis, SVP Marketing, Warner Bros. Discovery UK and Ireland, said: “Superman is an icon beloved around the world, and James Gunn’s new imagining of the world’s first superhero is something we’re proud to deliver to audiences of all ages everywhere this summer. Superman is this year’s most-anticipated film and we are excited to offer young UK fans the opportunity to feel a part of this singular moviegoing experience.”

BBFC Create The Card Competition for Superman is open for entries today, Wednesday 23 April, and will close on Wednesday 18 June 2025.

The competition is open to all UK-based children aged 12-16. Teachers and educators can support their students in entering the competition. Full details can be found on our website.

The BBFC has been issuing Black Cards since 1913 and they are synonymous with the British cinema experience.

A panel, including BBFC President Natasha Kaplinsky, industry experts from Warner Bros. Discovery and other special guests will oversee the selection process.

The winner will be revealed ahead of the film’s UK release on Friday 11 July 2025.

Young people aged 12-16 can enter by either scanning and emailing a copy of their A4 landscape design or posting it directly to the BBFC’s London offices:
