THE PAST is a subtitled French language drama in which an Iranian man returns to Paris in order to finalise his divorce. It is rated 12A for infrequent strong language and references to suicide.
There are three subtitled uses of strong language ('f**k'). There are also various uses of milder bad language, including 'ass', 'asshole', 'crap', 'damn', 'hell', 'jerk', 'merde' and 'shit'.
One character in the film has been in a coma for several months, following a suicide attempt. We are told that she consumed detergent after learning of her husband's affair with another women. There are several verbal references to her suicide attempt, as well as to her associated state of depression.
The film contains a few scenes of cigarette smoking.
No-one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD.
