THE LODGER - A STORY OF THE LONDON FOG is a silent film in which a killer known as 'The Avenger' is murdering fair haired woman, leading a family to become suspicious of their lodger. It was originally classified 'A' for cinema release in 1926 (meaning children should be accompanied by an adult) and then 'PG' for video release in 2000. This cinema re-release has been classified 'PG' for mild threat.

There are a number of scenes in which women are attacked by the killer. However, any threat is brief and there is no clear detail beyond occasional sight of the victims screaming. After death, the victims are shown lying on the ground with no visible injuries. In one sequence a character is shown to have blood trickling from his mouth after he is apprehended by a large mob and there is a tense scene in which the suspect is seen waiting outside a woman's bathroom as she innocently sits in the bath. The BBFC's Guidelines state that 'A 'PG' film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. Frightening sequences should not be prolonged or intense. Moderate violence, without detail, may be allowed, if justified by its context (for example, history, comedy or fantasy)'.

THE LODGER also includes some very mild bad language, with uses of 'damn' and 'God'. In addition, several characters are shown smoking, reflecting the period in which the film was made.
