Note: The following text may contain spoilers

THE HOMESMAN is a Western drama, based on the novel by Glendon Swarthout, in which three mentally ill women are transported across the prairies.

Violence

There are some moments of strong violence, including a splatter of blood when a man is shot through the head.

Sex

Scenes of sex include sight of thrusting. In a couple of scenes, a man is seen thrusting into his mentally ill wife, who remains unresponsive. Although she does not clearly withdraw consent, nor does she appear fully able to give consent. Accordingly, the scenes can be interpreted as examples of marital rape.

Self harm

The film also contains a scene of self-harm, in which a woman is shown piercing and cutting herself with a needle, drawing blood.

There are also scenes of emotional intensity, relating to issues of mental illness and the loss of infants soon after birth. There is also some mild bad language and smoking.
