DEAD POETS SOCIETY is a drama about an unconventional English professor who inspires his teenage students to develop a love of poetry, and to take control of their futures. At the time that the film was classified, the 12 certificate had yet to be introduced, giving BBFC examiners the choice between a PG or 15 rating for the film. It contains one scene of mild violence.

The one scene of mild violence takes the form of the implied suicide of a young male character. The boy takes a gun from his father's desk, and then all that is shown is a puff of smoke rising from behind the desk, and his hand and the pistol lying on the floor. The scene is well contextualised within the overall narrative, and the act of suicide is not glamorised, endorsed nor presented as an appropriate solution to the boy's problems. Other occasional mild violence includes a lad having his nose bloodied by a jealous school mate in a row over a girl.

A moment of mild nudity is seen in a brief image of a topless woman in a mildly sexualised pose in a girlie magazine.

Mild language includes occasional uses of 'shit' and 'bullshit', and there are some scenes in which the boys smoke a pipe.

PG stands for Parental Guidance. A PG film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.
