BBFC insight:

BATTLE LOS ANGELES is a science-fiction thriller about the invasion of Earth by aliens. The film was classified '12A' for scenes of moderate violence, sustained threat and infrequent strong language.

The main narrative of the film focuses on the defence of Los Angeles by a small squad of marines. They engage in frequent battles with aliens in which both humans and aliens are killed. The aliens use energy weapons that kill without causing penetrative wounds. When the aliens are injured or killed they have a colourless liquid for blood. Consequently, there is very little bloodshed in any of the battle scenes. The BBFC's Guidelines for '12A'/'12' state that 'Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood'. The frequency of the battle scenes creates a feeling of sustained threat in the film, but there is also an element of humour that does provide some respite. The Guidelines at '12A'/'12' state that 'disturbing sequences' should not be 'frequent or sustained'. While the film is close to the upper limit of the '12A' classification, the stronger and potentially disturbing sequences are not sustained enough to require the '15' category.

There are two uses of strong language in the film, both spoken at moments of high tension and drama. The Guidelines state that, 'the use of strong language (for example, 'fuck') must be infrequent'.

Parents can find additional information about the content of this film if they visit
