AFTER EARTH is a science fiction film set in a future where humans have moved to another planet. General Cypher Raige takes his young son Kitai with him on a training mission but their spaceship crashes on Earth and the son must be remotely guided across dangerous terrain in order to signal for help. The film is rated 12A for moderate threat, violence and injury detail.
There are several sequences where Kitai is placed in danger, mostly as he is pursued by various dangerous animals and fantastical creatures. However, the focus is on him coming into his own in these situations and proving his resourcefulness and ability to cope. He is sometimes scared, but also resilient and brave. He fights back against some of the creatures, stabbing with a special bladed weapon, but there is no strong gore or injury detail as a result.
Bloody injury detail features when a character is injured in the crash, with some blood seen on clothing. Later, the character has to perform surgery on himself, administering an arterial shunt by cutting into his artery either side of the wound and connecting the two incisions with a tube which fills with blood. His bloody hands are shown holding a scalpel, then pushing the tube into one of the incisions, but the cutting itself is not shown. It is a gory sequence, but within a clearly medical context .
Some moderately grisly images include the sight of dead humans who have been impaled on spiky tree branches, which protrude from their chests. These images are brief and very little blood is shown. Flashbacks to a character being attacked by a creature are shown largely in silhouette.
The film also contains some very mild bad language, including 'screwed', 'damn' and 'sucked'.
No-one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD.
